  21. Kermit software for Windows 95 is on the way.  This is a full-featured,
  22. fully native, 32-bit communications software package for Windows 95 from
  23. the Kermit Team at Columbia University for both serial and TCP/IP
  24. communication.
  25.  
  26. K-95 can be both icon/menu operated for newcomers or command-line executed
  27. for veterans (or any combination of the two for those who want it all).
  28.  
  29. LICENSING
  30.  
  31. Unlike other Kermit software, K-95 is not "free".  It is not available for
  32. downloading; it cannot be freely shared and given away.  Instead, it must be
  33. purchased and licensed.  It will be quite inexpensive.  It will be available
  34. in software retail chains and directly from Columbia University.  Aggressive
  35. quantity- and site-based licensing terms will also be available from Columbia,
  36. including special academic/nonprofit licenses.  Exact terms are still being
  37. worked out.

  39. Why isn't it free? --
  40.  
  41.  1. The Kermit Project operates entirely on the income it generates.
  42.  
  43.  2. Because of the rapid growth and commercialization of the Internet and
  44.     proliferation of "free software" CDROMs made from Internet ftp sites,
  45.     Kermit software is in wider use than ever before, but nobody is
  46.     ordering it from us.  Thus our income is down while our tech-support
  47.     workload is up.
  48.  
  49.  3. We could not have brought this software to you without making a
  50.     significant investment.
  51.  
  52. The status of other Kermit software (MS-DOS, UNIX, VMS, IBM Mainframe,
  53. etc) remains as it always has been.

  55. FEATURES

  57. K-95 comes with a graphical Dialer (menus, buttons, dialog boxes,
  58. notebooks, and all) to help you manage all your connections and all the
  59. settings for each one, without complicated initialization files, macro
  60. definitions, or SET commands.  The Kermit engine itself is launched from
  61. the Dialer pushbutton-style to make the desired connection automatically
  62. with all the appropriate settings.  Kermit veterans need not worry: It can
  63. also be run on its own like other Kermit programs.

  65. K-95 is a multithreaded multitasking NATIVE 32-bit Windows 95
  66. communication software application that is easy on your CPU.  It is fully
  67. integrated with Microsoft Telephony (TAPI) and Winsock, and can be used
  68. uniformly for both serial and network connections.
